What is happening with the D.O. Cava and Corpinnat?

¿Qué está pasando con la D.O. Cava y Corpinnat?

Vinnalia |

The world of Spanish sparkling wines is experiencing one of its most turbulent and exciting moments in recent decades. The break between theD.O. Cava and the Corpinnat movement have been generating debate for years, and in 2026 that debate has reached a new turning point: the departure of Juvé & Camps, one of the most emblematic houses of the appellation, has shaken the foundations of the sector.

The origin of the conflict: why was Corpinnat born?

To understand what is happening we have to go back to 2017, when a group of producers from Penedès, fed up with the direction the D.O. was taking. Cava, they decided to create their own path. The underlying problem was structural: the D.O. Cava had been designed around a production method (the traditional method), not around a specific territory. This allowed wineries from Extremadura, La Rioja or Aragón to produce cava under the same umbrella as the historic Catalan wineries.

For the quality producers of Penedès, this was unacceptable. While they were committed to long aging times, organic farming and expression of the terroir, the designation allowed them to produce cava in volume and at low cost under the same label. Consumer perception was damaged and the prestige of its wines diluted.

Thus, in April 2018, wineries such as Gramona, Llopart, Recaredo, Nadal, Sabaté i Coca and Torelló founded Corpinnat, a collective brand whose name is not coincidental: “cor” (heart in Catalan) + “Pinnat”, derived from the place name Penedès. It was born with its own and very strict rules, very far from the minimums of the D.O. Cava.

The key differences between D.O. Cava and Corpinnat

The difference is not just in name. It is about philosophy, origin and demand:

D.O. Cava Corpinnat
Territory All of Spain (more than 160 municipalities in 8 CC.AA.) Only the heart of Penedès
Grapes External purchase allowed 100% grapes from the estate
Agriculture Conventional allowed 100% organic mandatory
Vintage Mechanics allowed 100% manual mandatory
Minimum parenting 9 months (Brut Nature 18 months) 18 months minimum, 62% between 30 and 60 months
White label Allowed Prohibited
Preparation You can outsource 100% in the winery itself

In summary: Corpinnat is a radical commitment to quality, origin and sustainability, compared to a high-volume and competitively priced model.

The leak from wineries: the drip that does not stop

What began as a spin-off of six wineries that represented less than 1% of the volume of the D.O. Cava, has become a constantly growing movement. In 2025, Corpinnat already grouped 19 wineries, with two additions confirmed for 2026, exceeding 3 million bottles sold and 34 million euros in turnover.

But the real earthquake came on April 1, 2026, when Juvé & Camps, one of the most recognized houses in the D.O. Cava, both nationally and internationally, announced its departure from the denomination to join Corpinnat. The impact was threefold:

  • One of the historical and most recognized brands of the denomination is lost.
  • The D.O. Cava was already coming off a difficult 2025: 190 million bottles sold, 12.88% less than the previous year.
  • The message it sends to the market is powerful: if a winery with the weight of Juvé & Camps prefers Corpinnat, something is structurally changing.

In 2025 they had already abandoned the D.O. Dig into family wineries like Celler Torner & Bel or Celler Viader. And the speculation about who will be next does not stop.

The response of the D.O. Cava

The D.O. Cava has not sat idly by. In recent years it has opted for quality with the Cava de Guarda Superior:

  • Reserve: minimum 18 months of aging
  • Gran Reserva: minimum 30 months
  • Cava de Paraje Calificado: sparkling wines from a single estate, the maximum territorial expression within the DO

However, the challenge is enormous. Side. Cava is a name dominated by large companies such as Freixenet – now 100% controlled by the German multinational Henkell – and Codorníu. Changing this perception of mass is a slow and complex process.

The future: two incompatible models?

What is at stake goes beyond a tag war. It is a debate about what model of sparkling wine Spain wants to project to the world.

On the one hand, the D.O. Cava represents the large international denomination model, with millions of bottles present around the world at very competitive prices. On the other hand, Corpinnat represents the model of territory, craftsmanship and excellence without compromise. Although much smaller in volume, it progressively absorbs the symbolic capital and prestige of the Catalan sparkling wine.

There is even a third actor: the Clàssic Penedès wineries (DO Penedès), in talks with Corpinnat about the possible creation of a new joint designation of origin, although at the moment without a definitive agreement.

Our conclusion

At vinnalia.com we follow this evolution closely because we are passionate about it. Both the Cava de Guarda Superior and the Corpinnat wines represent the best of Spanish sparkling wine, although from very different philosophies.

What we can say with certainty is that the consumer wins: this debate has raised the level of the entire sector, forcing all actors to better justify their value proposition. And that, for those who love good wine, can only be good news.
