Payment of the Capellans Winery

Pago de los Capellanes is located one kilometer from Pedrosa de Duero, a town that in the 14th century housed a parish in which chaplains offered masses in exchange for small plots of land.

Over time, the microplots accumulated, gathering an extensive payment that the confiscation of Mendizábal (1855) returned to the town. The inhabitants of Pedrosa continue to call these lands the Pago de los Capellanes.

In the heart of the Ribera del Duero and on the slopes of Valdeorras, we put into practice the most beautiful way of loving a place: we make wines full of nature, energy and emotion.

From the Manvirgo slope to the calm course of the Duero, the most renowned area of the denomination. A constellation of plots of native vineyards in the Pedrosa countryside, on the hills of Mambrilla, on the slopes of La Horra and Gumiel. This is our origin, this is our Ribera.

Extreme weather
We are both a vineyard and a harsh plateau, and this very disparate contrast is clearly reflected in the climate of extremes. At the height of ripening, the unusual range of temperatures between torrid days and cold nights explains the character of the grapes, subjected to a strain that gives rise to their impressive balance.

The ideal soils
A calcareous soil of clay, sand and gravel supports the life of the Tempranillo vines, a variety that we locally know as Tinto Fino. This type of soil provides good drainage and adequate reserves of hydration and temperature to give the wines a velvety and mineral character.

Respectful viticulture
The wine is made in the vineyard, and it is in the vineyard where we put all our effort to express with transparency and honesty the unique personality of the place. Following the best tradition of our origins, the management of the vineyard is meticulous, aware of the environment and committed to the diversity and richness of the ecosystems.

Precision in the field
Each vineyard is unique and we develop a tailor-made viticulture for each plot. The work depends on the specific conditions of the soil as well as the climatic characteristics of the vintage. In the final stage of the cycle, we observe and care for the vineyard exhaustively to guarantee its health and balance. We select the grapes in the field, harvest by hand and seek to preserve the maximum typicity and quality.

The kingdom of structure
In the vineyard, a selected, precise and limited harvest. In the cellar, careful fermentation and maturation processes. And over time, one observation is renewed with each vintage: the tannic energy of our red wines works to crown a singular, unique structure. The essence of a fine, clean and lively force.
