ARDBEG An Oa 1L.
Information

Both locals, clad in raincoats, and visitors acknowledge that the Ardbeg distillery can be subject to extremely strong winds, torrential rain, and an unnerving layer of haar. However, these frequent weather phenomena would be far more extreme were it not for the presence of the Mull of Oa.

Topographically speaking, the distillery is protected from the harshest Atlantic weather by this rounded peninsula south of Islay. This vast and prominent headland is the inspiration forArdbeg An Oa.

Tasting notes

Nose

Round and smoky, like burnt apple wood, with creamy caramel, anise, molasses and dates. A curious suggestion of juicy fruits, such as peach and banana. With a drop of water, hints of the classic Ardbeg fragrance: lime, pine resin, fennel, saddle soap and tar. A soft waxy texture, like that of scented candle wax, and hints of smoky herbs. An Oa offers a subtle final reminder of the sea with saline and seaweed notes, always accompanied by creaminess.

Palate

A soft and creamy texture gives way to an intense syrupy sweetness, with flavors of milk chocolate, molasses caramel, anise, orange and smoky tea leaves. Mild and sweet spices (nutmeg and cinnamon), a touch of cigar smoke and a very peculiar flavor of roasted artichokes. Wood is always present in the liquor, with a subtle nutty touch reminiscent of a carpentry workshop. A long and sweet finish, with floral nuances, mint caramel and delicate notes of malted cookie. Persistent, seductive, smooth but intense finish, with flavors of anise, walnut and subtle, distant smoke.

Description

A drink with smoky power.

Like the Mull of Oa, it's remarkably well-rounded. This is largely due to a stint at Ardbeg's newly founded Gathering Vat.

Inside the vat, we collect whiskies from various cask types, including sweet Pedro Ximénez, spicy toasted virgin oak, and intense ex-bourbon casks, among others, where they blend together. The result is a drink with a rich smokiness, softened by a deliciously smooth sweetness. Ardbeg's distinctive peat , dark chocolate, and anise are enveloped in a smooth, silky blend of caramel, black pepper, and clove, before reaching an intense crescendo of flavor.
