Description
It was born in 2014 on Cristom's largest own vineyard site, situated on a gentle 109-acre bank in the Eola-Amity Hills, with altitudes ranging from 165 m to 244 m This plot, named in honor of the founder Paul Gerrie, is situated on deep and homogeneous volcanic soils Jory, Nekia, Saum, Ritner, Witzel combined with moderate slopes and east-southeast exposure, which guarantees a slow and balanced ripening.
The vineyard is planted at a density of 1,450 vines per acre, using Pinot Noir Dijon and Pommard clones to capture the freshness of the terroir. Shallow soils near the surface and deeper zones balance vigor and concentration in the clusters, reflecting the intention to maximize mineral expression. The region's maritime climate, with winds from the Van Duzer Corridor and high temperature fluctuations of up to 18°C per day, favors the preservation of natural acidity and the development of structure.
Viticulture at Paul Gerrie is sustainable and is in transition towards biodynamic practices, following Cristom's minimal intervention philosophy, with compost, cover crops and ecological soil management.
Traditional techniques were used during vinification: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, approximately 40-50% whole cluster and pump-over in open tanks, with gentle pressing and prolonged aging in French barrels (45% new), for 17-18 months, blending without clarification or filtration.
The 2021 vintage reaffirms the philosophy of this vineyard: restrained power, firm acidity, and defined structure, balancing the minerality of the subsoil with remarkable precision, as numerous reviews attest: Jeb Dunnuck (96), Decanter (93), Jancis Robinson (17.5+). Paul Gerrie stands out within Cristom's portfolio as a manifestation of the winery's future, merging volume (593 bottles produced) with a focus on quality and terroir.
