D.O. Almansa
D.O. Almansa, located in the south-east of the province of Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha), is especially famous for its native red grape, although a range of varieties is grown in its vineyards:
- Main red grapes: Garnacha Tintorera (notable for having both red skin and red flesh, which gives intense colour and structure) and Monastrell. Varieties such as Cencibel (Tempranillo), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot are also permitted.
- White grapes: Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Moscatel de Grano Menudo.
The red wines of D.O. Almansa are usually deeply coloured, structured, powerful and with great ageing potential, reflecting the harshness and altitude of its climate.
