D.O.P. Rías Baixas lies in western Galicia, mainly in the province of Pontevedra, with vineyards close to the Atlantic Ocean. It is the great benchmark for Albariño whites.

The soils generally have a significant granite component, accompanied in some areas by sand and other materials. They are usually acidic, well-drained and relatively poor soils, especially suited to varieties such as Albariño.

Albariño is the star of Rías Baixas. It is a white grape with relatively small bunches and thick skins, well adapted to Galicia's humid climate.

It produces wines with high acidity, great aromatic intensity and plenty of freshness. Its typical aromas include citrus, lime, lemon, green apple, peach, apricot, white flowers and herbal notes.

Some wines also show saline or mineral hints. Although many Albariños are drunk young, the more structured examples can show remarkable ageing potential in bottle.

Differences in proximity to the ocean, temperature, aspect and soil allow for different profiles within the appellation itself.

Although Albariño clearly dominates production, the D.O.P. also allows other traditional varieties. Among the whites are Loureira Blanca (Marqués), Treixadura, Caiño Blanco, Torrontés and Godello. There are also authorised red varieties such as Caiño Tinto, Espadeiro, Loureira Tinta, Sousón, Mencía, Brancellao and Pedral, among others.

White wines are the stars. In general they stand out for their freshness, high acidity, aromatic intensity and fruit expression. The classic profile of a Rías Baixas Albariño combines stone fruit and citrus with floral notes and a fresh, persistent finish.
